Threats to Biodiversity
There are various threats to biodiversity and it is important that we save our diversity.
- Climate Change - We are already feeling warmer oceans, hotter temperatures and more severe weather events. Many species can’t adjust to these conditions, and their numbers are decreasing rapidly. Climate change is taking place because we humans are contributing to a lot of pollution in the environment.
- Changes to how we use the land and water - Both land and sea contain a large number of animals that make up the ecosystem. People make political changes for their own benefit which affects the ecosystem. For Example - The government repeatedly creates power-plants that use coal. They should instead make solar power-plants as it is safe for the environment.
- Invasive Species - This is a huge problem as species are intentionally or accidentally introduced. Invasive species are capable of causing extinctions of plants and animals causing loss to biodiversity. Some invasive species are - Purple loosestrife, Emerald ash borer, Japanese knotweed etc.
- Increased Pollution - Pollution of air, soil, and water adds to a lot of problems to various ecosystems. Plastic pollution mostly harms marine life and causes many aquatic animals to die. Air pollution also adds up to fewer species, less diversity, and weakened ecosystems. For Example - Many whales, dolphins, sea turtles etc. are dyeing due to plastic pollution and animals are choking too, due to plastic pollution.
- Overexploitation/Overfishing - Is removing marine life. If we keep doing so, we will threaten endangered species and they will become extinct. For Example- Overexploitation of the environment. We cut too many trees and many animals and species have a chance of getting extinct.
All of these issues are happening due to the human activities listed above.
